Obskura

Helsinki 2022

Task

The exhibition Obskura explores themes of fear and paranoia inspired by the global pandemic, combining auditory and visual storytelling. It features 14 stories, presented in written and visual format. The exhibition aims to provoke reflection on the chaotic events of the past two years.

Challenge

I sought to avoid pandemic clichés, such as face masks and toilet paper, while addressing fear and paranoia in a fresh way. I needed to connect modern fear to historical and psychological themes, avoiding simplistic horror depictions. The challenge was finding an artistic approach that resonates with both ancient and modern concepts of fear.

Solution

Inspired by Freud’s essay “Uncanny,” and Nordic folklore, I merged ancient superstitions with contemporary anxieties. I developed a minimalist, atmospheric style using diverse materials like bones and graveyard soil to evoke deep-rooted fears. Supported by a work grant, I brought these ideas to life through 14 haunting characters, each accompanied by a poetic backstory.
